On the the death of civil rights activist, The Rev. Willie T. Barrow

March 12, 2015

Today, Chicago has lost an icon in the fight for civil and equal rights. The Rev. Willie T. Barrow, known across this country as the ‘Little Warrior’ was a noted author, preacher, activist and civil rights leader who made significant accomplishments in improving the lives of the residents of Chicago and across the country.

Her leadership paved the way for many politicians, community and civil rights leaders.

On behalf of the Mary’s Court Foundation, we celebrate the life and great legacy of this phenomenal woman who passed on her love, passion and courage to generations of men and women.  Our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this time. IT twitter statement on Rev Willie Barrow1

Isiah Thomas, along with Etan Thomas, Alonzo Mourning, and other sports and entertainment leaders participated in a panel discussion that shared their stories of overcoming poverty and tough childhoods, and stressed that education is the best way out at the NBA All-Star #BlackLivesMatter Youth Summit. This event was in collaboration with the Etan Thomas Foundation, National Basketball Players Association and BET. With over 1,000 African-American students in attendance at the Canaan Baptist Church of Christ, you can see the impact that this event had on these young people.

“When I go back home to the west side of Chicago, I am not introduced as a two-time NBA champion first,” Thomas said. “I am introduced as a Master of Education from the University of California at Berkeley. This is Isiah Thomas, and that is my story.”
